For more than half-a-century, we’ve been celebrating National Small Business Week in the US. By Presidential Proclamation one week each Spring is designated to recognize small businesses and the contributions that they make to local communities and the national economy. This year’s observance is May 5 – May 11, 2019.
Many people do not realize that over 50% of Americans either own or work for a small business, and small business owners create about 2 out of every 3 new jobs in the U.S. annually. With over 90% of all companies across the US considered “small business”, it’s important to support these owners and employers, whose businesses are the backbone of the US economy.
Get Involved
If you are wondering how to show your support for small business enterprises and the amazing work they do, here are some ideas:
- Check your local listings for celebrations in your community. City and county governments, libraries, and companies across the nation are celebrating with free activities and community events. Spread the word and join in the fun. After all, it’s a celebration!
- Network and get to know other small businesses by attending an event. The Small Business Administration (SBA) has put together events you can attend in person or watch online (including hackathons, award ceremonies, Twitter chats, and virtual learning programs).
- Show your appreciation. As a small business owner, this is also a great time to recognize the people that support you and your company. Be creative and thank your employees and customers in your special way. Let them know that you couldn’t be there without them. You might even host your own event and invite your suppliers and vendors. Whatever you do, make it yours!
Happy Small Business Week to All!
